Plant Lover's Diary found unfamiliar thing inside his Papaya fruit

On October 17, 2023, Plant Lover’s Diary shared a 105-minute clip on his Facebook page. In the video, he discovered something unusual inside the papaya fruits harvested from his garden. He dubbed it “kapag kasi inaalog siya mayroong tumutunog sa loob”. Upon cutting the papaya fruit, he found a big C-shaped object that is rarely found inside papayas.

This phenomenon usually occurs in most fruit seeds with high humidity and nearly matured fruits, but it is rarely seen in papaya. This is called the viviparous phenomenon in papaya, which refers to the early germination of seedlings inside the fruits due to high humidity and environmental temperature. Pseudo-germination happens before the fruits detach from the mother tree.

The flesh of fruits with viviparous seeds is safe to eat and there is nothing to worry about. However, the taste and texture may be affected due to the vivipary phenomenon inside the fruit.
