Dr. Romulo Gelbolingo Davide, Ph.D. as 44th National Scientist

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. honored Agricultural Scientist Dr. Romulo Gelbolingo Davide, Ph.D. as a National Scientist through Proclamation No. 643 on August 2, 2024. Davide was known from his contribution to Agriculture on discovering nematode-trapping fungus which are the P. lilacinus and P. oxalicum, because of his discovery without any conflict of interest he was named as 'Father of Nematology'.
"Nematodes are among the most abundant animals on Earth. They occur as parasites in animals and plants or as free-living forms in soil, fresh water, marine environments, and even such unusual places as vinegar, beer malts, and water-filled cracks deep within Earth’s crust. The number of named species is about 20,000, but it is probable that only a small proportion of the free-living forms have been identified. " -Britannica
Davide was originally motivated to search a cheapest biological control for Nematodes due to costly nematicides and its environmental effects. His discovery leads to develop BIOCON, the first biological control products of the Philippines that can fight Nematodes in crops.

On its trial in single application, a one field of okra fungus can sustain the two to three crop rotation without fresh application of fungus. It because the fungus naturally grow in soil. Davide contribution truly enhance the production of Agricultural products through cheapest and effective biological control agent.
